muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarتَفَثٌ
Core sense — he left off anointing himself and became dirtygenerated
1.1the state of being dirty, with matted and dusty hair long left unanointed—تَفَثٌ
The verb means: he left off anointing himself and shaving his pubes, and so became dirty..
So in relation to the rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage. ISh explained it this way, but no other lexicologist did; he says it is one of the rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage, which is a conventional term of the professors, or lecturers, of the colleges.
I'Ab: it means the shaving, and the shortening or clipping, of the beard and mustache and the hair of the armpit, and the slaughtering of the victims, and the casting of the pebbles.
Fr: the slaughtering of the victims termed بُدْن and of other victims, namely kine, and sheep or goats, and shaving the head, and paring the nails, and the like.
AO says that no poem is cited as giving an example of it.
Zj says that it is not known by the lexicologists except from the expositors of the Qur'ān, who say that it is the clipping of the mustache, the paring of the nails, the plucking out of the hair of the armpit, the shaving of the pubes, and the clipping of the hair of the head.
Or the plucking out of the hair, and the paring of the nails, and the turning away from all that is forbidden to the مُحْرِم, as though it were a passing from the state of إِحْرَام to the state of إِحْلَال.
Or, in the rites and ceremonies of the pilgrimage, the doing of such things as paring the nails, clipping the mustache, shaving the pubes and the head, casting the pebbles, and slaughtering the بُدْن and the like. [In two copies of the S this article is omitted.]
the doing away with the matted and dusty state of the hair by shaving, paring the nails, and the like—قَضَآءُ التَّفَثِ
Or the doing away with the matted and dusty state of the hair, and with pollution and dirt, in general.
This is ISh's explanation. Or it means the doing away with the state of تَفَث by clipping the mustache, paring the nails, plucking out the hair of the armpit, and shaving the pubes.
then let them accomplish their needful acts of shaving and cleansing—ثُمَّ لِيَقْضُوا تَفَثَهُمْ
IAar, on Qur'ān 22:30.
Or it means: then let them do away with their dirtiness, by clipping the mustache, paring the nails, plucking out the hair of the armpit, and shaving the pubes, on the occasion of إِحْلَال. It is an allowance, after entering the state of إِحْلَال, of what was forbidden to them in the state of إِحْرَام.
Qur’ān 22:30 approximate — somewhere between 22:11 and 22:30 Lane cites “Kur xxii. 30”
Qur’ān 22:29 located by this root inside the range Lane’s citation allows
ثُمَّ لْيَقْضُوا۟ تَفَثَهُمْ وَلْيُوفُوا۟ نُذُورَهُمْ وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا۟ بِٱلْبَيْتِ ٱلْعَتِيقِ"Then let them complete the rites prescribed for them, perform their vows, and (again) circumambulate the Ancient House."Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1.1and the blood contaminated the place of it—فَتَفَثَتِ الدِمَآءُ مَكَانَهُ
Occurs in a tradition; the Arabic has the plural, literally "bloods".
