Core sense — nine; and, in compound, nineteengenerated
1nine men—تِسْعَةُ رِجَالٍ
Applied to denote a number, [namely nine,] it is masculine, and تِسْعٌ so applied is feminine. The feminine is also written تَسْعٌ with fet-h to the ت, and is so pronounced in the Kur 38:22 according to one reading.
nine women—تِسْعٌ نِسْوَةٍ
nine things are more than eight things—تِسْعَةُ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ ثَمَانِيَةَ
When it means the things numbered, and not the amount of the number, تسعة is imperfectly declinable, being treated as a proper name.
and we formerly gave to Moses nine evident signs—وَ لَقَدْ آتَيْنَا مُوسَى تِسْعَ آيَاتٍ بَيِّنَاتٍ
In the Kur 17:103. The signs are generally understood to be the principal miracles Moses was empowered to perform, which are enumerated differently in various works; but some suppose that statutes are meant.
Qur’ān 38:23 approximate — somewhere between 38:6 and 38:32 Lane cites “Kur xxxviii. 22”
Qur’ān 38:23 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
إِنَّ هَـٰذَآ أَخِى لَهُۥ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةً وَلِىَ نَعْجَةٌ وَٰحِدَةٌ فَقَالَ أَكْفِلْنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِى فِى ٱلْخِطَابِ"This man is my brother: He has nine and ninety ewes, and I have (but) one: Yet he says, 'commit her to my care,' and is (moreover) harsh to me in speech."Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1nineteen (masculine)—تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
Some of the Arabs pronounce it تِسْعَةَ عْشَرَ.
nineteen (feminine)—تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ
In both, each of the two words ends with fet-h in every case, because they are two nouns treated as one noun.
This form belongs to the dialect of El-Hijáz [and to most of the Arabs]; in the dialect of Nejd it is pronounced تِسْعَ عَشِرَةَ. See art. عشر.
In the Kur 74:30 some read تِسْعَةَ عْشَرَ, making the ع in عشر sākin instead of تِسْعَهَ عَشَرَ, from dislike of this succession of vowels in what is like a single word.
Qur’ān 74:30 approximate — somewhere between 74:28 and 74:38 Lane cites “Kur lxxiv. 30”
Qur’ān 74:30 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَOver it are Nineteen.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
Qur’ānic occurrences تِسْعَة
27:48

74:30
عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَOver it are Nineteen.
Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.
