It is the opposite of فَوْق, and التَّحْتُ [signifying The location that is beneath, below, or under,] is opposed to الفَوْقُ. It is used of what is separate from another thing, while الأَسْفَلُ is used of what is joined with [or is a part of] another thing.
Sometimes تَحْت is an adverbial noun with a vague meaning, which is not clear unless it is prefixed to another word.

Sometimes it is a simple noun; in that case, [not having the article ال,] it is indeclinable, ending in ḍamma, provided that the noun to which it would be prefixed is dropped and its meaning, but not the word itself, is intended to be understood.

التَّحْتُ is the singular of this word, which in the CK is wrongly written التُّحُتُ.
the hour of resurrection will not come until the ignoble prevail and the noble perish—لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى تَظْهَرَ التُّحُوتُ وَ تَهْلِكَ الوُعُولُ
Said in a tradition. Some say the meaning is: until the treasures that are beneath the earth appear.
that the weak of mankind shall gain power over the strong—أَنْ يَعْلُو التُّحُوتُ الوُعُولَ
In another tradition this is said to be among the signs of the resurrection.

is the contr. of فَوْق : (Msb, K:) and التَّحْتُ [signifying The location that is beneath, below, or under,] is opposed to الفَوْقُ , and is used in relation to that which is separate from another thing; الأَسْفَلُ being used in relation to that which is united with [or a part of] another thing. (Kull.) Sometimes, (K,) تَحْت is an adv. n., (Msb, K,) having a vague signification, its meaning not being clear unless it is prefixed to another word, as in the phrase هٰذَا تَحْتَ هٰذَا [This is beneath, below, or under, this]. (Msb.)
