such a one trades on land and sea—فُلَانٌ يَتَّجِرُ فِى البَرِّ وَ البَحْرِ

There can hardly, if at all, be found any other instance of ت immediately followed by ج, except نتج and رتج; the ت in تُجَاهَ is originally و.

These are they who have bartered Guidance for error: But their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction,

61:10

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰ تِجَـٰرَةٍ تُنجِيكُم مِّنْ عَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ

O ye who believe! Shall I lead you to a bargain that will save you from a grievous Penalty?-

(Bd ibid.) [See also 1.] Also Merchandise, meaning what is sold and bought, of goods, or commodities, or householdfurniture, and the like; a quasi-inf. n. used in the sense of a pass. part. n. (Mgh.) A merchant; one who practises trade or commerce; a trafficker; a trader; a dealer; one who sells and buys, and who sells and buys for gain.

The Arabs also called a vintner, or seller of wine, by this name. According to IAth, this last is said to be the primary meaning; hence the saying in a tradition:

Plural تُجَّارٌ and تِجَارٌ and تَجْرٌ [or rather this last is an ism jamʿ,] like صَحْبٌ from صَاحِبٌ, and تُجُرٌ, or this may be a plural of تِجَارٌ.

التَّجِرُ, occurring in a verse of El-Akhtal, [for التَّاجِرُ,] is thought by ISd to be like طَهِرٌ [for طَاهِرٌ].

A man skilful in an affair. The Arabs say:

Abu ʿObeyd: also a she-camel that sells easily, or is in much demand, in trade and in the market.

Or, of this second word: a she-camel that is goodly and sells easily, or is in much demand; or one that sells easily when offered, because of her excellence; or simply one that sells easily, or is in much demand, as though, by reason of her beauty and fatness, she sold herself. It is the opposite of كَاسِدَةٌ. The plural of تاجرة is تَوَاجِرُ.

keep to the commodities that sell easily, or are in much demand—عَلَيْكَ بِالسِّلَعِ التَّوَاجِرِ

he is upon a most noble horse—هُوَ عَلَى أَكْرَمِ تَاجِرَةٍ
