muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarتَبَعٌ تُبُوعٌ مُتَابَعَةٌ
Core sense — he followed him, he overtook him, he sued him for a duegenerated
1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe followed him, or went behind him; said of a people, or company of men—اِتَّبَعَهُ
maṣdar تَبَعٌ and تَبَاعَةٌ.
he followed him—أَتْبَعَهُ
I overtook them, they having gone before me—أَتْبَعْتُهُمْ
I overtook them—تَبِعْتُهُمْ
Or: he went with him after the other had passed by him.
Akh says that تَبِعْتُهُ and أَتْبَعْتُهُ mean the same.
and a shooting star piercing the darkness with its light overtakes him—فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ
and the devil overtook him—فَأَتْبَعَهُ الشَّيْطَانُ
and Pharaoh overtook them with his troops—فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ فِرْعَوْنُ بِجُنُودِهِ
Ibn-ʿArafeh: or he almost did so. Or it means he made his troops follow them, the ب being redundant according to some.
he followed his footsteps, and sought him, following him—أَتْبَعَهُ
he went after them when they had passed by him—اِتَّبَعَهُمْ
he went after them when they had passed by him—تَبِعَهُمْ
.
I did not stop following them until I overtook them—مَا زِلْتُ أَتَّبِعُهُمْ حَتَّى
Fr says that أَتْبَعَ is better than اِتَّبَعَ, because the latter means he went behind him while the other was going along; but when you say أَتْبَعْتُهُ, it is as though you followed his footsteps.
he followed him, wanting to do him evil, as Pharaoh followed Moses—اِتَّبَعَ فُلَانٌ
Given in this shape, but perhaps a mistake for أَتْبَعَ.
I went after the thing—تَبِعْتُ الشَّىْءَ
Some say this.
he followed the thing in respect of actions—تَبِعَ الشَّىْءَ
maṣdar تَبَعٌ and تَبَاعٌ.
he followed the Imām, doing as he did—تَبِعَ الإِمَامَ
he did as the other did—اِتَّبَعَهُ
he followed the Qurʾān as his guide, acting according to what is in it—اِتَّبَعَ القُرْآنَ
he followed him, or imitated him, in doing such a thing—تَابَعَهُ عَلَى الأَمْرِ
This is the more common way of saying it.
Also على كَذَا; maṣdar مُتَابَعَةٌ and تِبَاعٌ. But this phrase has another meaning: see 3.
fire shall not be made to follow to the grave—لَا يُتْبَعُ بِنَارٍ إِلَى القَبْرِ
The verb may be passive of تَبِعَ or of أَتْبَعَ.
the same, in another relation, also in the passive form—لا يُتَّبَعُ
It may also be rendered: one shall not follow with fire to the grave. It is said that the ب makes the verb transitive.
1.1.1I prosecuted, or sued, the man for my right, or due—تَبِعْتُ الرَّجُلَ بِحَقِّى
I prosecuted, or sued, the man for my right, or due—تَابَعْتُهُ بِهِ
and probably تبَاعٌ also.
I prosecuted, or sued, the man for my right, or due—اِتَّبَعْتُهُ به
then prosecution for the bloodwit shall be made with lenity—فَٱتِّبَاعٌ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ
This is the meaning in the Qurʾān 2:173.
1.1.2figurative · مجاز — inferredhe accepted a reference from his debtor to another for the payment of what was owed to him—تَبِعَ
Its muḍāriʿ يَتْبَع occurs in a tradition (see 4), pronounced by the relaters of traditions with teshdeed, يَتَّبِع.
