Core sense — he returned to it; he bore his sin; he was slain in retaliationgenerated
1.1and they returned with anger from God—
.
He returned, went back, or came back, to it, namely a thing; or he withdrew, from a person or persons or a place, to it or him; or perhaps he made himself only and especially a companion, or an associate, to him or it: اِنْقَطَعَ.
In some copies of the K the second explanation is joined to the first by وَ [and] instead of أَو.
In the Kur 2:58 and 3:108; that is, the anger of God came upon them: or they returned deserving anger from God; or they became deserving of anger from God.
From بَآءَ فُلَانٌ بِفُلَانٍ: such a one was deserving of being, or fit to be, slain in retaliation for such a one, because he was his equal. The primary meaning of بَوْءٌ is said to be that of equalling, or being equal with. [See a similar phrase, also from the Kur, below.]

Qur’ān 2:61 Lane quotes this verse
And remember ye said: "O Moses! we cannot endure one kind of food (always); so beseech thy Lord for us to produce for us of what the earth groweth, -its pot-herbs, and cucumbers, Its garlic, lentils, and onions." He said: "Will ye exchange the better for the worse? Go ye down to any town, and ye shall find what ye want!" They were covered with humiliation and misery; they drew on themselves the wrath of Allah. This because they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah and slaying His Messengers without just cause. This because they rebelled and went on transgressing.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1.1I returned it, took it back, or brought it back, to him—بُؤْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْهِ
Literally, I returned with it to him.
Also أَبَأْتُهُ and بُؤْتُهُ, but this last is rare.
1.1.2he returned laden with his sin—
he bore, or took upon himself, the burden of his sin, crime, or offence—بَآءَ بِذَنْبِهِ
So Akh; the muḍāriʿ and maṣdar are as above. Or, according to As, he acknowledged, or confessed, it.
Muḍāriʿ as above; maṣdars بَوْءٌ and بَوَآءٌ.
Aboo-Is-hák: اِحْتَمَلَهُ; and he became as though he were the abiding-place of it. Or he became burdened, or laden, with it. Or he became, or made himself, answerable, responsible, or accountable, for it, by an inseparable obligation, اِلْتَزَمَ بِهِ: for the primary meaning of بَوَآءٌ is said to be لُزُومٌ [that is, adhesion and the like], and it is then used in every case with a meaning of this kind, as the case requires; so it is said in the Nh, and stated clearly by Z and Er-Rāghib. Or he acknowledged, or confessed, it.
I desire that you return laden with the sin of killing me and your earlier sin—
In the Kur 5:35. Or: I desire that you should bear my sin, if I were to reach out my hand towards you, and your sin in reaching out your hand towards me; or the sin committed against me in killing me, and your sin for which your offering was not accepted.
Each noun stands in the place of a denotative of state; that is, that you return involved in the two sins, bearing them.
Perhaps the speaker meant: if that must inevitably happen, I desire that it be your act, not mine; so the real meaning is that it should not be his, not that it should be his brother's.
Or by إِثْمٌ may be meant the punishment for it, since desiring the punishment of the disobedient is allowable.
so they bore the burden of anger upon anger—فَبَاؤُوا بِغَضَبٍ عَلَى غَضَبٍ
Th: the meaning is, if you have decided on killing me, the sin will be in you, not in me.
So Aboo-Is-hák explains it, in the Kur 2:84; اِحْتَمَلُوا, which he says is the proper meaning of the verb. Or, as some say, they bore the burden of sin for which they deserved the fire following upon sin for which they deserved the same; or they returned laden with anger upon anger; or they became deserving of anger upon anger. [See a similar phrase, also from the Kur, above.]
I acknowledge, or confess, to You your favour [towards me, as imposing an obligation upon me]—أَبُوْءُ إِلَيْكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ
Said in a form of prayer.
he acknowledged himself answerable for his right, due, or just claim—بَآءٌ بِحَقِّهِ
he acknowledged himself answerable for his blood—بِدِّمِهِ
on this sense The verb always expresses acknowledgement, or confession, of something for which its agent is, as it were, indebted, or answerable; not the contrary.

Qur’ān 2:90 Lane quotes this verse
Miserable is the price for which they have sold their souls, in that they deny (the revelation) which Allah has sent down, in insolent envy that Allah of His Grace should send it to any of His servants He pleases: Thus have they drawn on themselves Wrath upon Wrath. And humiliating is the punishment of those who reject Faith.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1.3it became in my hand—
In a poem of Sakhr-el-Gheí, said of a sword: my hand became to it a مَبَآءَة, that is, مَأْوًى [or place of abode]; it returned, and became in my hand.
Or, according to Ibn-Habeeb, the same as اِسْتَقَلَّ [apparently a mistranscription for اِسْتَقَرَّ, it rested, or remained; the verb بآء in this phrase being from بَوَآءٌ, meaning لُزُومٌ, explained above].
1.2it suited, matched, tallied, or agreed—
such a one was the like, or equal, of such a one, to be slain in retaliation for him—بَآءَ فُلَانٌ بِفُلَانٍ
Said of a thing.
.
Or he became his like, or equal, so that he was slain in retaliation for him; and was slain for him, his blood becoming a compensation for the blood of the other; or was deserving of being, or fit to be, slain in retaliation for him, because he was his equal; or was slain for him, and so became equal with him. Also أَبَآءَهُ and بَاوَأَهُ.
be one of those who are slain in retaliation for him—بُؤْبِهِ
'Arári became slain for Kahl—
A proverb: these were two cows, which struck each other with their horns, and both died. It is applied to any two that become equal. See also art. عر.
Lane cites “Bd in ii. 58” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.2.1he made his blood equal with, or an equivalent for, the other's blood—
maṣdars بَوْءٌ and بَوَآءٌ; that is, by shedding it in retaliation.
he slew him in retaliation for him—بَآءَهُ
[Or بَآءَهُ بِهِ,] or أَبَآءَهُ به and اِسْتِبَآءَهُ به; that is, the slayer for the slain.
he slew such a one in retaliation for such a one—أَبَآءَ فُلَانًا بِفُلَانٍ
he slew him in retaliation—أَبَآءَهُ
Said when the Sultán has retaliated for a man upon another man.
said of the Sultán, or of another.
1.3he exalted himself, or was proud—
Apparently formed by transposition of the second and third radical letters, the ى being changed into ا, from بَأَى.

3:112
Shame is pitched over them (Like a tent) wherever they are found, except when under a covenant (of protection) from Allah and from men; they draw on themselves wrath from Allah, and pitched over them is (the tent of) destitution. This because they rejected the Signs of Allah, and slew the prophets in defiance of right; this because they rebelled and transgressed beyond bounds.
3:162
Is the man who follows the good pleasure of Allah Like the man who draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and whose abode is in Hell?- A woeful refuge!
5:29
For me, I intend to let thee draw on thyself my sin as well as thine, for thou wilt be among the companions of the fire, and that is the reward of those who do wrong."
8:16
If any do turn his back to them on such a day - unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own)- he draws on himself the wrath of Allah, and his abode is Hell,- an evil refuge (indeed)!
