muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُيَبْقَىmaṣdarبَقَآءٌ بَقْىٌ
Core sense — it remained, continued, lasted; he looked at, or watched, himgenerated
1.1it remained, continued, lasted, endured; it was, or became, permanent, or perpetual—بَقَى
maṣdar بَقَآءٌ and بَاقِيَةٌ [but see this latter below].
[And according to the CK, بَقًى and بَقْىٌ; but this is a mistake, وَبَقَى و بَقْيًا being there put by error for بَقَى بَقْيًا, which is explained by what follows.]
Some write this form بَقَا; its muḍāriʿ is as above, and its. It belongs to the dialect of Belhārith Ibn-Kaab, or of Teiyi, who in the same way say بَقَتْ instead of بَقَيَتْ.
The like is done in other verbs of the same class, whether the kesreh and the ى be original, as in بَقِىَ and نَسِىَ and فَنِىَ, or accidental, as in the passive verbs هُدِىَ and بُنِىَ.
Synonymous with دَامَ and ثَبَتَ; the opposite of فَنِىَ.
remaining, continuing, lasting, or enduring—بَقَآءٌ
[the abode of everlasting existence;] the world to come—دَارُ البَقَآءِ
Er-Rāghib: this is a thing's remaining, continuing, lasting, or enduring in its first state, to a period fixed by the will of God — either in its bodily substance, as with a heavenly orb, or in its kind only, as with the human and other animal races; and also the continuing to exist for ever, either by itself, as with God alone, or otherwise, and this again either in bodily substance, as with an inhabitant of Paradise, or in kind only, as with the fruits of the inhabitants of Paradise.
Hence this expression, which is mentioned under دور.
he lived [or continued in life] a long time—بَقِىَ زَمَانًا طَوِيلًا
he, or it, remained, or continued, in his, or its, state or condition—بَقِىَ عَلَى حَالِهِ
he endured, or bore up against, difficulty, distress, or adversity—بَقِىَ عَلَى الشِّدَّةِ
a remainder, remnant, relic, or residue of what remained—بَقِى مِنَ الشَّىْءِ بَقِيَّةٌ
such a thing remained over and above, and behind, of it—بَقِىَ مِنْهُ كَذَا
The verb is said of a thing, and in the same way of a man.
Also تبقّى.
1.2he looked at him, or it; or he watched, or observed, him, or it—بَقَاهُ
Written with ى and with و for the last radical; first person بَقَيْتُهُ and بَقَوْتُهُ; muḍāriʿ of the former بَقِىَ [of the former verb].
I looked, watched, or waited, for him, or it—بَقَيْتُهُ
The K joins the two meanings with “or”, the S with “and”.
Mentioned under بقو; also بَقَوْتُهُ, but the former is the more approved. [See also art. بقو.]
such a one looks at the thing, and watches, or observes, it—فُلَانٌ يَبْقِى الشَّىْءَ بِبَصَرِهِ
we looked, watched, or waited, for the Apostle of God—بَقَيْنَا رَسُولَ ٱللّٰهِ
Said in a tradition.
