Form 1بَغَى10 senses · 1 main
muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarبُغَآءٌ بَغْىٌ بِغَآءٌ

Core sense — he sought something; he acted wrongfully; he enviedgenerated

1.1he sought something; he tried to find and get itبُغَايَةٌ

or this last is a simple noun and the maṣdar is بَغْىٌ, and بُغًى; but the first is better known and is the chaste form.

Some say بِغًى and بُغْيَةٌ and بِغْيَةٌ, according to Th, but others hold these two to be simple nouns; and some mention also بَغْيَةٌ, with fet-h.

Said of a stray beast, or of anything else, good or evil.

Also ابتغى and تبغّى and استبغى.

Er-Rāghib: or ابتغى means he sought diligently, earnestly.

بَغَى also means he loved, or liked, a thing. Er-Rāghib: the maṣdar means the seeking to go beyond the just bounds in what one aims at, whether one actually goes beyond them or not; sometimes this is taken in relation to quantity, sometimes in relation to quality.

[He sought him with an evil purpose; or sought to do him evil]بَغَاهُ بِشَرٍّ

This phrase is given under the article عقب.

1.1.1he sought a thing for himبَغَاهُ

Like بَغَى لَهُ.

he sought the thing for himبَغَاهُ الشَّىْءَ

Also ابغاهُ الشَّىْءَ; so one says اِبْغِنِى كَذَا or أَبْغِنِى كذا.

seek for me such a thingاِبْغَ لِى كذا
seek for me my stray beastأَبْغِنِى ضَالَّتِى

Or ابغاهُ الشَّىءَ means he helped him to seek the thing; or أَبْغِنِى كَذَا means both “seek for me such a thing” and “help me to seek such a thing”.

[They seek, or desire, discord for you]يَبْغُونَكُمُ الفِتْنَةَ
[You seek crookedness in it]تَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا

In the Qur'an 9:47.

In the Qur'an 3:94, “it” being the way of God. The first object of the verb is in the accusative because the preposition ل is suppressed.

1.1.2it brought disease upon me; it caused disease to befall meبَغَانِى دَآءً
he is one who makes much gainإِنَّهُ لَذُو بُغَايَةٍ

Apparently from the foregoing.

But in the M, ذُو بُغَايَةٍ لِلْكَسْبِ, meaning a seeker of gain.

good was not appointed to happen to himمَابُغِىَ لَهُ
1.1.3he envied his brotherبَغَى عَلَى أَخِيهِ

That is, he wished that a blessing, or cause of happiness, or an excellence, might pass from his brother to himself. So says Lh, who holds this to be the primary meaning of the verb.

.

[Envy is the shackle of aid from God against an enemy or a wrongdoer]البَغْىُ عِقَالُ النَّصْرِ

Said as a proverb.

1.1.4acting wrongfully, injuriously, or tyrannicallyبَغْىٌ
he exalted himself over him; he overpowered or oppressed him; he acted wrongfully towards himبَغَى عَلَيْهِ
he acted wrongfully towards him, and deviated from the right wayبغى عَلَى النَّاسِ

So called because the envier acts in this way towards the envied, his aim being to make God's blessing depart from him by guile. Or it is the seeking to act corruptly, wrongly, or unjustly; or the going beyond the due bounds in any way.

Er-Rāghib: it is of two kinds. One is approved: going beyond the bounds of fairness to do good, and beyond the bounds of obligatory duties to do what is not obligatory. The other is disapproved: going beyond the bounds of what is true or right, so as to do what is false or wrong, or things of a doubtful nature. In most instances it is the disapproved kind.

. And it is said of one who acts wrongfully towards people and seeks to annoy or hurt them.

[What have I to do with wrongful conduct, the wrongful conduct of one of you towards another?]مَا لِى وَلِلْبَغِ بَعْضِكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ

Lh mentions this on the authority of Ks, for وَلِلْبَغْىِ; ISd thinks this is because of the difficulty of pronouncing the kesreh after the ى.

he occupied himself with corrupt, wrong, or unjust conductبَغَى

[According to Fei,] from the same verb in a sense mentioned below, said of a wound.

Also, with and: he magnified himself, or behaved proudly, haughtily, or insolently; because one who does so passes beyond the bounds of his own station to a station that is not his.

1.1.5he was proud, or self-conceited, and quick in his gaitبَغَى فِى مِشيَتِهِ

.

Apparently said of a horse, and perhaps of a man also.

Or بَغْىٌ, in a horse, or in the running of a horse, is being proud, or self-conceited, with extreme briskness or liveliness.

1.1.6the sky rained violentlyبَغَتِ السَّمَآءُ

. Er-Rāghib: or it went beyond the limit of the rain that was wanted.

the valley flowed with water reaching a place it had not reached beforeبَغَى الوَادِى
1.1.7she committed fornication, or adultery; she prostituted herselfبَغَتْ

Said of a woman, or of a female slave, but not restricted to the latter., though only the former is commonly known. So called because a woman who does this goes beyond her proper bounds.

she prostituted herselfبَاغَتْ

Maṣdar بِغَآءٌ and مُبَاغَاةٌ; said of a female slave. Or مباغاة means committing fornication, or adultery, with another.

[And do not compel your young women to prostitute themselves]وَلَا تُكْرِهُو فَتَيَاتِكُمْ عَلَى البِغَآءِ
[The woman went out to prostitute herself]خَرَجَتِ المَرْأَةُ تُبَاغِى

In the Qur'an 24:33.

According to the Jemaʿ et-Tefáreek, بِغَآءٌ means the knowing of a woman's fornication, adultery, or prostitution of herself, and approving of it, or being content with it; but this, if correct, is a stretching of the language.

1.1.8the wound swelled, became corrupt, and produced thick pusبَغَى الجُرْحُ

.

his wound healed with some corruption in itبَرَأَ جُرْحُهُ عَلَى بَغْىٍ
1.1.9he lied; he said what was untrueبَغَى

.

And you say, خَرَجَتِ المَرْأَةُ تُبَاغِى [The woman went forth for prostituting herself]. (S.) Accord. to the Jema etTefáreek, بِغَآءٌ signifies The knowing of a woman's committing fornication or adultery, or prostituting herself, and approving, or being content: but this, if correct, is an amplification in speech. (Mgh.) بَغَى الجُرْحُ , (JK, S, Msb,) aor. بَغَىَ , inf. n. بَغْىٌ , (JK,) The wound swelled, (S,) and became in a corrupt state, (JK, S, Msb,) and produced thick purulent matter. (JK.) Form 7انبغى1 sense

Core sense — it was, or became, suitable, fit, or proper; it ought to be sogenerated

7.1[It is fit, or proper, for you to do such a thing]يَنْبَغِى لَكَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ كَذَا

It is said in the S to be the quasi-passive of بَغَيْتُهُ, as اِنْكَسَرَ is of كَسَرْتُهُ.

Esh-Shiháb says of the muḍāriʿ that it is the quasi-passive of بَغَاهُ, in the sense of طَلَبَهُ.

[Fei says,] it has been asserted that انبغى is the quasi-passive of بَغَى; but a verb of the measure انفعل is not used as a quasi-passive unless it implies effort and the result of an action, as in the case of كَسَرْتُهُ, whose quasi-passive is اِنْكَسَرَ, which انبغى does not imply. Some, however, allow it to be used in this way.

According to Zj, it is as though it were synonymous with اِنْطَلَبَ as quasi-passive of طَلَبَ, and means: it was, or became, suitable, fit, meet, or proper; or right, and allowable, and good; or very requisite; or it was one's duty.

it was, or became, fit or proper for such a one to do such a thingاِنْبَغَى لِفُلَانٍ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ
it is not right, proper, or allowable for you to do this; and it is not good for youمَا يَنْبَغِى لَكَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ هٰذَا

Lh gives this as explaining the two phrases that follow it; the meaning is according to Esh-Shiháb, who adds that only the muḍāriʿ has been heard from the Arabs in this sense.

the sameما يُبْتَغَى

Er-Rāghib: and it was, or became, made easy; and practicable, or manageable.

According to some, this verb is not used in the past tense, but only in the muḍāriʿ, and it is reckoned among verbs imperfectly inflected; but the past tense is mentioned by AZ, Sb and Zj, and by El-Khattábee on the authority of Ks, and was often used by Esh-Sháfiʿee. It is, however, very rare.

According to Zj.

It is with fet-h to the غ.

That is, it is not well that such a thing should be neglected, or left undone.

it is not right that it should be so; or it is not goodمَا يَنْبَغِى أَنْ يَكُونَ كَذَا

is said in the S to be quasi-pass. of بَغَيْتُهُ , like as اِنْكَسَرَ is of كَسَرْتُهُ ; and Esh-Shiháb says of the aor. that it is quasi-pass. of بَغَاهُ , aor. يَبْغِيهِ , in the sense of طَلَبَهُ : (TA:) [Fei says,] it has been asserted that انبغى is quasi-pass. of بَغَى ; but a verb of the measure انفعل is not used as a quasi-pass. unless it implies effort, and the consequence of an action, as in the case of كَسَرْتُهُ , of which the quasi-pass. is اِنْكَسَرَ ; which انبغى does not: some, however, allow its being thus used: (Msb:) accord. to Zj, it is as though it were syn. with اِنْطَلَبَ , as quasi-pass. of طَلَبَ , and means It was, or became, suitable, fit, meet, or proper; (Zj, TA;) [or right, and allowable; and good: or very requisite: (see explanations of exs. following:) or it behooved: and] it was, or became, facilitated, or easy; (Er-Rághib, K;) and practicable, or manageable. (Er-Rághib, TA.) Accord. to some, this verb is not used in the pret. tense, but only in the aor.: it is reckoned among verbs imperfectly inflected: (Msb, TA:) but the pret. is mentioned by AZ and Sb and Zj, and by ElKhattábee on the authority of Ks; and was often used by Esh-Sháfi'ee: it is, however, very rare. (TA.) You say, يَنْبَغِى لَكَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ كَذَا [It is suitable to thee, or is fit, meet, or proper, &c., for thee, or it behooveth thee, that thou shouldst do such a thing]. (S, TA.) And, accord. to Zj, اِنْبَغَى لِفُلَانٍ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ , as meaning It was, or became, suitable to such a one, or fit, meet, or proper, for him, that he should do, or to do, such a thing. (TA.) And مَا يَنْبَغِى لَكَ أَنْ تَفْعَلَ هٰذَا , (Lh, K,) and ما يُبْتَغَى , (K, TA,) with fet-h to the غ , (TA,) and ما ٱنْبَغَى , and ما ٱبْتُغِىَ ; (Lh, K;) of which four phrases, the first is given by Lh as explanatory of the third and fourth, and means, accord. to Esh-Shiháb, It is not right, proper, fit, or meet, nor allowable, for thee that thou shouldst do this, or to do this; and it is not good for thee &c.; but he adds that only the aor. has been heard from the Arabs in this sense. (TA.) And يَنْبَغِى أَنْ يَكُونَ كَذَا It is very requisite that it should be so, or that such a thing ought be; [or it ought to be so, or such a thing ought to be; it behooves that it should be so, or such a thing behooves;] it is not well that such a thing should be neglected, or left undone. (Msb.) And Ks is related to have heard, from the Arabs, the phrase, مَا يَنْبَغِى أَنْ يَكُونَ كَذَا , meaning It is not right that it should be so, or that such a thing should be: or it is not good &c. (Msb.) It is said in the Kur [xxxvi. 69], وَمَا عَلَّمْنَاهُ الشِّعْرَ وَمَا يَنْبَغِى لَهُ , i. e. [And we have not taught him poetry, or versification], nor is it right, proper, fit, or meet, for him: (Bd:) or nor is it easy to him, (Bd, Jel, Er-Rághib,) or practicable to him. (Bd, Er-Rághib.)

Nounبَغِىٌّ3 senses · 1 main

Core sense — a fornicatress, or a prostitute; a female slave; a female singergenerated

1a fornicatress, an adulteress, or a prostituteبَغُوٌّ

According to some, of the measure فَعِيلٌ; according to others, of the measure فَعُولٌ, originally بَغُوىٌ. [If of the first, it originally meant “sought”; if of the second, “seeking”.] Either way it does not take the feminine ending ة.

A fornicatress, an adulteress, or a prostitute.

[Of the measure فَعُولٌ, and therefore irregular, like نَهُوٌّ.]

بَغِىٌّ is not applied to a man, nor بَغِيَّةٌ to a woman.

Plural بَغَايَا. [See an example under مَهْرٌ.]

1.1[The female slaves stood over their heads]قَامَتْ عَلَى رُؤُسِهِمُ البَغَايَا

Also a female slave, whether she is a fornicatress or an adulteress or a prostitute or not; not meant as abuse, though the word was originally applied to female slaves because they prostituted themselves.

Or a free woman who is a fornicatress or an adulteress or a prostitute — so in the K; but correctly, a fornicatress or an adulteress or a prostitute, whether free or a slave.

And a female singer, even a chaste one, because fornication was originally attributed to such a person. Plural as above.

(JK, S, TA.) One says, قَامَتْ عَلَى رُؤُسِهِمُ البَغَايَا [The female slaves stood over their heads].
