1.1he, or it, came upon him suddenly, unexpectedly, without his being aware of it—باغتهُ
. Maṣdar بَغْتٌ, بَغْتَةٌ, بَغَتٌ, بَغَتَةٌ, and بَغَتَّةٌ, this last with teshdeed to the ت and of the same measure as جَرَبَّةٌ, according to AA's reading of the Qur'ān in a passage given below; it has no parallel among maṣdars, [and some say it has an intensive meaning.] The meaning is: he, or it, came upon him, or happened to him, suddenly, unexpectedly, without his being aware of it, or without any previous cause; it took him by surprise, or unawares.
This form has the same meaning; its maṣdar is مُبَاغَتَةٌ and بِغَاتٌ.
[When the hour of the resurrection comes upon them suddenly, unexpectedly, &c.]—
This is in the Qur'ān 6:31, according to the reading mentioned above.
he, or it, came to him suddenly, &c.—جَآءَهُ بَغْتَةً
he met, or found, him, or it, suddenly, &c.—لَقِيَهُ بَغْتَةً
I am not secure from the enemy's comings [upon me] unawares—

Qur’ān 6:31 Lane quotes this verse
Lost indeed are they who treat it as a falsehood that they must meet Allah,- until on a sudden the hour is on them, and they say: "Ah! woe unto us that we took no thought of it"; for they bear their burdens on their backs, and evil indeed are the burdens that they bear?Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
