muḍāriʿـِيَفْعِلُ·ـُيَفْعُلُ
Core sense — he seized him violently, he assaulted himgenerated
1.1[on the day when we make the greatest assault]—يَوْمَ نُبْطِشُ البَطْشَةَ الكُبْرَى
Muḍāriʿ بَطِشَ and بَطُشَ, the first being the reading adopted by the seven readers in chapter 44, verse 15 of the Qur'ān; maṣdar بَطْشٌ. He seized him violently and laid violent hands on him; he assaulted him; or he seized him violently, in anger; or he laid hold of him violently in making an assault.
أَبْطَشَهُ means the same as بَطَشَ بِهِ, but is rare; it occurs in the words of the Qur'ān 44:15.
So according to the reading of El-Hasan and Ibn-Rejā. Or, according to AHāt, and Bd says much the same, the meaning is: on the day when we give power over them to such as shall assault them [with the great assault; or make to assault with the great assault].

Qur’ān 44:16 Lane quotes this verse
يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ ٱلْبَطْشَةَ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَOne day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution!Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1.1and that upon which the eye does not fall, and of which the hand does not take hold—وَ مَا لَا يَقَعُ عَلَيْهِ العَيْنُ وَ لَا يَبْطِشُهُ الكَفُّ
Also: he took hold of anything, or clung to it, strongly.
In this saying of El-Hulwānee the preposition [بِ] is understood; or the verb is used as carrying the meaning of الأَخْذُ and التَّنَاوُلُ.
