He was, or became, slow, tardy, late, or backward, in his going or course and in his gait; the opposite of أَسْرَعَ.; maṣdar بُطْءٌ and بَطَآءَةٌ, with fetḥ and medd, or بِطَآءٌ, like كِتَابٌ and ابطأ.
Or, said of a man, it means his coming was late, or backward; [it is apparently a phrase with a word left out, standing for ابطأ مَشْيَهُ, he made his pace, or going, slow, or the like; see اسرع].
بَطُؤَ [denotes what is as it were an inborn quality; see again أَسْرَعَ], or is said of a person's coming, meaning it was, or became, slow.
بُطْءٌ is the opposite of سُرْعَةٌ.
One should not say أَبْطَيْتَ for أَبْطَأْتَ. See also form 6.
