He was, or became, slow, tardy, late, or backward, in his going or course and in his gait; the opposite of أَسْرَعَ.; maṣdar بُطْءٌ and بَطَآءَةٌ, with fetḥ and medd, or بِطَآءٌ, like كِتَابٌ and ابطأ.

Or, said of a man, it means his coming was late, or backward; [it is apparently a phrase with a word left out, standing for ابطأ مَشْيَهُ, he made his pace, or going, slow, or the like; see اسرع].

بَطُؤَ [denotes what is as it were an inborn quality; see again أَسْرَعَ], or is said of a person's coming, meaning it was, or became, slow.

بُطْءٌ is the opposite of سُرْعَةٌ.

One should not say أَبْطَيْتَ for أَبْطَأْتَ. See also form 6.

, aor. بَطُاَ , inf. n. بُطْءٌ (S, Msb, K) and بَطَآءَةٌ , with fet-h and medd, (Msb,) or بِطَآءٌ , like كِتَابٌ ; (K;) and ابطأ ; (S, Msb, K;) He was, or became, slow, tardy, dilatory, late, or backward; contr. of أَسْرَعَ ; (K;) in his going or course, and in his gait [&c.]: (TA:) or the latter is said of a man; (S, Msb;) meaning [as above; or] his coming was late, or backward; (Msb;) [and is app. elliptical, for ابطأ مَشْيَهُ he made his pace, or going, slow, &c.; or the like; see اسرع :] and بَطُؤَ [denotes what is as it were an innate quality; see, again, أَسْرَعَ ; or] is said of one's coming; [meaning it was, or became, slow, &c.;] (S, Msb;) بُطْءٌ being the contr. of سُرْعَةٌ . 2.1the man whom his evil deeds hold back will not be advanced by his noble lineage in the world to come—مَنْ بَطَّأَ بِهِ عَمَلُهُ لَمْ يُسْرِعْ بِهِ نَسَبُهُ

[And بطّأهُ, with the maṣdar given below, means: it made him slow, or backward.] It kept him, or held him, back; or put him back.

what made you slow?—مَا أَبْطَأَ بِكَ

مَا بَطَّأَ and مَا بَطَّأَكَ have the same meaning.

وَإِنَّ مِنكُمْ لَمَن لَّيُبَطِّئَنَّ فَإِنْ أَصَـٰبَتْكُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالَ قَدْ أَنْعَمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىَّ إِذْ لَمْ أَكُن مَّعَهُمْ شَهِيدًا

There are certainly among you men who would tarry behind: If a misfortune befalls you, they say: "Allah did favour us in that we were not present among them."

[and بطّأهُ , inf. n. as below, It made him slow, tardy, dilatory, late, or backward;] it kept him, or held him, back; or put him back, or backward. (TA.) It is said in a trad., مَنْ بَطَّأَ بِهِ عَمَلُهُ لَمْ يُسْرِعْ بِهِ نَسَبُهُ Him whom his evil deeds keep, or hold, back, or put back, or backward, his nobility of lineage will not profit, [or advance, or put forward,] in the life to come, or in the world to come. (TA.) مَا أَبْطَأَ بِكَ and مَا بَطَّأَ signify the same [What made thee, or hath made thee, slow? &c.]; (S, TA;) and so مَا بَطَّأَكَ . (TA.) And you say, بَطَّأَ عَلَيْهِ بِالأَمْرِ , inf. n. تَبْطِىْءٌ ; and ابطأ بِهِ ; He delayed to him [the doing of] the thing, or affair. (K.)

This second form is irregular; it means the same as بَطُؤَ ذَا خُرُوجًا.

The fetḥah in the last syllable of بَطُؤَ is transferred to the ن of بُطْآن, and the dammeh of the ط to the ب.

The meaning is one of wonder: مَا أَبْطَأَهُ.

[بطآن is a khabar placed before its mubtadaʾ; and, being originally بَطُؤَ, it may be a simple khabar, or a khabar with an intensive meaning, since that verb means simply “it was slow”; it may be taken as parallel to رَمُوَ, “excellent is he in his shooting!”, and قَضُوَ, “excellent is he in his judging!”; or it may be equivalent to مَا أَبْطَأَ, as some hold.
