Core sense — it appeared, became apparent; an opinion arose in his mind; they went to the desertgenerated
1.1he, or it, came in sight, or within sight—
maṣdar بُدُوٌّ, بَدْوٌ, بَدَآءٌ, بَدَآءَةٌ, and بَدًا, for which last some copies of the K give بُدُوٌّ, a repetition, or بُدُوْءٌ.
It appeared; it became apparent, open, plain, or evident.
[This signifies the same; or he showed himself, or it showed itself; see an example in art. جيش under جَاشَ, last sentence.]
1.1.1figurative · مجازan opinion presented itself to him, or arose in his mind—بَدَا لَهُ فِى الأَمْرِ
Maṣdar بَدْوٌ, بَدًا, and بَدَآءٌ, or بَدَآءَةٌ, and بَدَاةٌ, or بَدَا لَهُ فِى الأَمْرِ بَدَآءٌ, the last word being in the nominative case because it is the agent.
Synonym نَشَأَ. Or: an opinion appeared to him about the affair, or case, different from his first opinion, so that it turned him away from it; or there appeared to him, about the affair, what did not appear at first.
another opinion appeared to me—بَدَا لِى بَدَآءٌ
my opinion changed from what it was—بَدَا لِى بَدًا
then an opinion arose in their minds—ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا رَأَوُا ٱلْآيَاتِ لَيَسْجُنَنَّهُ
So Fr.
So Az.
Esh-Shemmākh says: [Maybe — though it is right that the promise be fulfilled — an opinion different from your first opinion has arisen in your mind about that young she-camel]
In the Kur 12:35, meaning بَدَا لَهُمْ بَدَآءٌ وَقَالُوا لَيَسْجُنُنَّهُ [i.e. then an opinion arose in their minds, after they had seen the signs of his innocence, and they said that they should certainly imprison him], because ليسجننّه, being a proposition, cannot be the agent. So says Sb.
God determined that He would slay them—بَدَا لِلّهِ أَنْ يَقْتُلَهُمْ
Occurring in a tradition. As IAth says, بَدَآءٌ means deeming right a thing that is known after its having been not known, and this may not be attributed to God.
it occurred to him that he should do such a thing—بَدَا لَهُ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ كَذَا
As Suh says in the R, one may say this of God, meaning He desired to do such a thing; also The phrase in the tradition mentioned above has been explained in this way.
do this as long as it seems fit to you—اِفْعَلْ كَذَا مَا بَدَا لَكَ
See a verse of El-Ahmar cited under جَلَّ.
1.1.2the people, or company of men, went out to the desert—
Maṣdar بَدْوٌ or بَدَآءٌ [the latter is said in the TA to be the right one].
they went out to the desert—بَدَا إِلَى البَادِيَةِ
Maṣdar بَدَاوَةٌ and بِدَاوَةٌ.
The desert here is the بَادِيَة. Or, of the first verb: they went out to their بَادِيَة, or went out from the region of towns, villages, or cultivated land to the pasturing-places in the deserts.
ISd says بَدْوٌ may be used as meaning بِدَاوَةٌ, which is the opposite of حِضَارَةٌ.
J says بَدَاوَةٌ and بِدَاوَةٌ mean dwelling, or abiding, in the بَادِيَة [or desert], the opposite of حِضَارَةٌ; but Th says he knows بَدَاوَةٌ with fatḥ only on the authority of AZ alone.
As says that بداوة and حضارة have kesr to the ب and fatḥ to the ح, but AZ says the reverse, with fatḥ to the ب and kesr to the ح. Both are also explained as the going out to the بَادِيَة. Some mention بُدَاوَةٌ with ḍamm, but this is not known.
he went out from the constant sources of water to the places where herbage was to be sought—تبدّى
Or: he dwelt, or abode, in the بَادِيَة [or desert].
whoever abides in the desert becomes rude, rough, or uncivil, like the desert Arabs—مَنْ بَدَا جَفَا
Said in a tradition.
he used to go out to these water-courses in the desert, or these high grounds, or low grounds—كَانَ يَبْدُو إِلَى هٰذِهِ التِّلَاعِ
Said in another tradition.
1.1.3he voided his excrement—
So called because one who does this goes out from the tents or houses into the open country.
Also ابدى [and ابدأ].
1.2he began with me by doing such a thing—
. This is like بَدَأَنِى.
1.3the land produced, or abounded with, truffles—
The truffles are بَدَاة; or the land had truffles in it.
1.3.1dust, or earth—
Said of land: it had dust, or earth, in it.

6:28
Yea, in their own (eyes) will become manifest what before they concealed. But if they were returned, they would certainly relapse to the things they were forbidden, for they are indeed liars.
12:35
Then it occurred to the men, after they had seen the signs, (that it was best) to imprison him for a time.
20:121
In the result, they both ate of the tree, and so their nakedness appeared to them: they began to sew together, for their covering, leaves from the Garden: thus did Adam disobey his Lord, and allow himself to be seduced.
39:48
For the evils of their Deeds will confront them, and they will be (completely) encircled by that which they used to mock at!
45:33
Then will appear to them the evil (fruits) of what they did, and they will be completely encircled by that which they used to mock at!
Occurrences of this form in the Qur’ān, not Lane’s choice of verse. They show the word in use; they do not say which sense above applies. Where more occur than are shown, the shortest āyāt are chosen.

(M, TA.) ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا رَأَوُا ٱلْآيَاتِ لَيَسْجُنَنَّهُ , in the Kur [xii.35], means بَدَا لَهُمْ بَدَآءٌ وَقَالُوا لَيَسْجُنُنَّهُ , [i.e. Then an opinion arose in their minds, after they had seen the signs of his innocence, and they said that they should certainly imprison him,] because ليسجننّه , being a proposition, cannot be the agent: so says Sb. (M.) بَدَا لِلّهِ أَنْ يَقْتُلَهُمْ , occurring in a trad., means God determined that He would slay them: for, as IAth says, بَدَآءٌ signifies the deeming to be right a thing that is known after its having been not known; and this may not be attributed to God: but as is said by Suh, in the R, one may say, [of God,] بَدَا لَهُ أَنْ يَفْعَلَ كَذَا , [properly signifying It occurred to him, or appeared to him, that he should do such a thing,] as meaning He desired to do such a thing; [as also بَدَا لَهُ فِى فِعْلِ كَذَا ;] and thus the phrase in the trad., here mentioned, has been explained. (TA.) Do thou thus as long as it seems fit to thee: see, a verse of El-Ahmar cited voce جَلَّ .] بَدْوٌ , (S,) or بَدَآءٌ ; (M, K;) [the latter of which is said in the TA to be the right;] or بَدَا إِلَى البَادِيَةِ , inf. n. بَدَاوَةٌ and بِدَاوَةٌ ; (Msb;) The people, or company of men, went forth to the بَادِيَة [or desert]: (M, Msb, K:) or, the former, went forth to their بَادِيَة : (S:) or went forth from the region, or district, of towns or villages or of cultivated land, to the pasturingplaces in the deserts: (T:) [ISd says,] بَدْوٌ may be used as meaning بِدَاوَةٌ , which is the contr. of حِضَارَةٌ : (M:) [J says,] بَدَاوَةٌ and بِدَاوَةٌ signify the dwelling, or abiding, in the بَادِيَة [or desert]; the contr. of حِضَارَةٌ : but Th says, I know not بَدَاوَةٌ , with fet-h, except on the authority of AZ alone: (S:) As says that بداوة and حضارة are with kesr to the ب and fet-h to the ح ; but AZ says the reverse, i. e. with fet-h to the ب and kesr to the ح : (T:) both are also explained as signifying the going forth to the بَادِيَة : and some mention بُدَاوَةٌ , with damm; but this is not known: (TA:) تبدّى like wise signifies he went forth from the constant sources of water to the places where herbage was to be sought [in the desert]; (T;) or he dwelt, or abode, in the بَادِيَة . (S, K.) It is said in a trad., مَنْ بَدَا جَفَا , i. e. He who abides in the desert becomes rude, rough, coarse, or uncivil, like the desert-Arabs. (S.) And in another, [He used to go forth to these water-courses in the desert, or these high grounds, or low grounds, &c.]. (TA.) [Hence,] بَدَا He voided his excrement, or ordure; (M, K;) as also ابدى (T, K) [and ابدأ ]: because he who does so goes forth from the tents or houses into the open country. (T.) بَدَانِى بِكَذَا , aor. يَبْدُو , is like بَدَأَنِى [i. e. He began with me by doing such a thing]. (M, TA.) The land produced, or abounded with, بَدَاة , i. e. truffles: (K, * TA:) or had in it truffles. (TK.) And The land had in it بَدَاة , meaning dust, or earth. (K, * TK.)
