So in some copies of the S; but in a copy in the author's own handwriting آوَّهْ, said there to be with medd, with teshdeed and fet-h to the و, and with the ه sākin.

According to Aboo-Tálib, آوَّهْ with medd, as the common people pronounce it, is wrong.

And أَوَّاه and أَوُّوه. [In both of these, and in some of the forms that follow, it is doubtful whether the ه is sākin or has a vowel, and, if it has one, which vowel.]

And آوُوهُ or أَوُوهُ, which ISd says is with medd; AHát mentions it as heard from the Arabs.

And أَوَتَاه or أَوَتَاهُ or أَوَّتَاه, and آوَّتَاه. (S, [in one copy of which the ه is marked as sākin.])

And آوَيَّاه with medd, or أَوِيَّاهُ, and أَوِّ, and آوِ, and آوٍ, and وَاهًا, and هَاهٌ or هَاهُ.

A word imitating the voice, cry, or exclamation of the مُتَأَهِّه.

That is, a word expressing pain, grief, sorrow, lamentation, complaint, or moaning, and marking the prolonging of the voice in complaint. (S, TA, after أَوَّهْ or آوَّهْ)

Sometimes a man says آهِ out of affection, pity, or compassion, and out of impatience.

It is also said that آهًا expresses grief or lamentation, or the most intense grief, lamentation, or regret; that it is in the accusative case because it is used in the manner of maṣdars; and that the hemzeh is originally و.

But IAth says that آهًا expresses pain, grief, sorrow, lamentation, complaint, or moaning, and is used of evil, as وَاهًا is used of good.

And آوَّهْ, آوِ, and آوٍ are cries uttered to horses to make them return. (ISh and TA in art. اوى. See form 2 in that article in the present work.)

Ah, or alas, for such a thing!—آهِ مِنْ كَذَا

In the same way one says أَوْهِ and the like, followed by مِنْ, by لِ, and by عَلَى.

It occurs in the saying of El-Muthakkib El-'Abdee: [When I arise to saddle her, by night, she moans with the moaning of the sorrowful man]

إِذَا مَاقُمْتُ أَرْحَلُهَا بِلَيْلٍتَأَوَّهُ آهَةَ الرَّجُلِ الحَزِينِ

ISd says that, in his opinion, the noun is here put in the place of the maṣdar, that is, تَأَوُّه.

But some recite the verse differently, saying أَهَّةَ, from أَهَّ, meaning تَوَجَّعَ; and some say تَهَوَّهُ هَاهَةَ.

May God make you moan!—آهَةً لَكَ

Said in calling down evil on a man.

Also أَوَّةً لَكَ, with the ه dropped and with teshdeed to the و.

Or one who says Ah! or alas! out of affection, pity, or compassion, and out of fear.

Or one who celebrates the praises of God, or praises Him greatly, or glorifies Him; or who praises much or often.
