Core sense — the nose; the extremity of anything; the first part of anything; a lord, chiefgenerated
1figurative · مجاز — inferred[he scents the dust with his two nostrils]—يَسُوفُ بِأَنْفِيْهِ النِّقَاعَ
A word of well-known meaning: the nose, مَعْطِسٌ; the whole made up of the two nostrils, the septum, and the bone called قَصَبَة, which is the hard part of the انف.
Also explained as مَنْخِرٌ, plainly an explanation by a synecdoche, since that word properly means nostril.
It belongs to man and to other creatures.
أُنْفٌ is a variant of the same, and so is إِنْفٌ, a form used only by the common people.
The plurals are آنُفٌ and آنَافٌ (of paucity) and أُنُوفٌ (of multitude).
he scents, or sniffs, the odour, and follows it—هُوَ يَتَتَبَّعُ أَنْفَهُ
The dual is applied to the two nostrils, as in the saying of Muzáhim El-ʿOkeylee.
In the T, however, I find يَتْبَعُ in the place of يتتبّع.
[she makes a show of affection with her nose, by smelling her young one, without true love]—تَرْأَمُ بِأَنْفِهِا
