1what is the measure of the distance between you and El-Koofeh?—كَمْ أَمْتُ بَيْنَكَ مَا بَيْنَ الكُوفَةِ
A measure of distance and the like.
2wine is unlawful: there is no doubt about its unlawfulness—الخَمْرُ حَرُمَتْ لَا أَمْتَ فِيهَا
Doubt. It is said to be called this because the word means computing, or guessing, measure, quantity and the like, in which there is doubt. See form 1.
Or the meaning is: there is no indulgence or leniency about it; from أَمْتٌ in the sense of feebleness, or weakness, in a journey or pace.
there is no doubt about wine, that it is unlawful—لَيْسَ فى الخَمْرِ أَمْتٌ
In the like of these two instances it may signify disagreement, or difference of opinion, about a thing.
3the ground was even, so that there was no depression and elevation in it—اسْتَوَتِ الأَرْضُ فَمَا بَهَا أَمْتٌ
Curvity, crookedness, distortion, or unevenness; ruggedness in one place and smoothness in another, [inequality of surface,] one part being higher, or more prominent, than another; an elevated place; small mounds; or what is elevated, of ground.
Or, as some say, the water-courses of valleys, such as are low, or depressed; small hills, hillocks; a hollow, or depressed place, between any two elevated portions of ground and the like.
Depression and elevation, or lowness and highness, in the ground; used in this sense in the Qur'ān 20:106; and the same in a water-skin not completely filled.
Or laxity in a water-skin when it is not well filled so as to overflow; or a [result of] pouring water into a skin until it doubles, or creases, without filling it, so that one part of it is higher, or more prominent, than another.
Plural إِمَاتٌ — in some copies آمَاتٌ, and in the CK اَماتٌ — and أُمُوتٌ.
the skin became full, so that there was no depression and elevation in it—اِمْتَلَأَ السِّقَآءُ فَمَا بِهِ أَمْتٌ
he had filled the water-skin so full that there was no laxity in it—قَدْ مَلَأَ القِرْبَةَ مَلْأً لَا أَمْتَ فِيهِ

3.1[may there be a defect, or the like,] in stones, not in you—أَمْتٌ فِى الحَجَرِ لَا فِيكَ
A fault, a defect, an imperfection, or a blemish, in the mouth, in a garment or piece of cloth, and in a stone.
The meaning is: may God preserve you when the stones have perished.
This proverb is mentioned by the commentators on the Tes-heel, not by Meyd.
امت is here in the nominative, though the phrase expresses a prayer, because it is not a verbal word; the phrase is like التُّرابُ لَهْ, and beginning the sentence with an indefinite noun is acceptable because it is in effect a prayer.
3.2we made a journey, or went at a pace, in which there was no weakness or feebleness—سِرْنَا سَيْرًا لَا أَمْتَ فِيهِ
Weakness; feebleness; languor; remissness.

A measure of distance [&c.]; as in the saying, كَمْ أَمْتُ بَيْنَكَ مَا بَيْنَ الكُوفَةِ What is the measure of the distance between thee and El-Koofeh? (T, TA.) Doubt: (Th, T, M:) said to be so termed because this word signifies the “ computing, or conjecturing, measure, quantity, and the like, ” in which there is doubt. (T, TA.) [See 1.] So in the following ex.: الخَمْرُ حَرُمَتْ لَا أَمْتَ فِيهَا Wine is unlawful: there is no doubt respecting the unlawfulness of it: (Sh, Th, T, K:) or the meaning is, there is no indulgence, or lenity, with respect to it; from أَمْتٌ as signifying “feebleness, or weakness,” in a journey, or pace.
