In the Qurʼān 52:21. According to one reading, that of Ibn-Ketheer, ما أَلِتْنَاهُمْ. See also art. ليت.
Qur’ān 52:21 matched to Lane’s own quotation of it Lane cites “Kur lii. 21”
Qur’ān 52:21 Lane quotes this verse
And those who believe and whose families follow them in Faith,- to them shall We join their families: Nor shall We deprive them (of the fruit) of aught of their works: (Yet) is each individual in pledge for his deeds.Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.3he withheld him, or restrained him, and turned him away from his course, purpose, or object—أَلَتَهُ
Also written أَلَتَهُ عَنْ وَجْهِهِ.
لَاتَهُ is a variant dialect form of it, the two being mentioned by Yz on the authority of AA.
أَلَاتَهُ is also used: see art. ليت.
1.4he made him swear, or take an oath—أَلَتَهُ
Also written أَلَتَهُ يَمِينًا.
he pressed him hard with an oath—أَلَتَهُ بِيَمِينٍ
do you lower the dignity of the prince of the faithful? or do you diminish to him [the respect that is due to him]?—أَتَأْلِتُ عَلَى أَمِيرِ المُؤْمِنِينَ
Or: he asked him to swear, or to give his testimony, for him.
The maṣdar is as above.
It is related that a man said to ʿOmar, "Fear God, O prince of the faithful", and another, hearing him, said this.
So according to IAar; or rather, do you conjure the prince of the faithful? — his saying "Fear God" being as though he conjured him by God.
The Arabs say أَلَتُّكَ بِاللّٰهِ لَمَّا فَعَلْتَ كَذَا, meaning I conjure you by God to do this, or such a thing.
