When the night covered him over, He saw a star: He said: "This is my Lord." But when it set, He said: "I love not those that set."

6:78

فَلَمَّا رَءَا ٱلشَّمْسَ بَازِغَةً قَالَ هَـٰذَا رَبِّى هَـٰذَآ أَكْبَرُ ۖ فَلَمَّآ أَفَلَتْ قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنِّى بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ

When he saw the sun rising in splendour, he said: "This is my Lord; this is the greatest (of all)." But when the sun set, he said: "O my people! I am indeed free from your (guilt) of giving partners to Allah.

, (T, S, Msb, K,) said of a thing, (Msb,) or of the moon, (T,) and أَفَلَتْ , said of the sun, (T, S, M,) and of the stars, (M,) aor. اَفِلَ and اَفُلَ , inf. n. أُفُولٌ (T, S, M, Msb, K) and أفْلٌ , (M, Msb,) It was, or became, absent, or hidden, or concealed; (T, S, Msb, K;) it set; (T, S, M, &c.;) and so أَفِلَ , aor. اَفَلَ . (K.) Hence, أَفَلَ فُلَانٌ عَنِ البَلَدِ Such a one became absent, or went away, from the country, or town. (Msb.)

Nounأَفِيلٌ1 sense

Core sense — a young camel that has entered its second yeargenerated

1[The stallion-camel is only that which has grown up from the young camel in its second year, etc.]—إِنَّمَا القَرْمِ مِنَ الأَفِيلِ

A young camel such as is termed اِبْنُ مَخَاضٍ [i. e. that has entered its second year], according to As and El-Fárábee, and the like; or, according to El-Fárábee, also one older than this; or also such as is termed اِبْنُ لَبُونٍ [i. e. that has entered its third year], beyond which it is not so called; or one seven or eight months old; or a youthful camel; and also a young weaned camel, فَصِيلٌّ.

Feminine with ة; plural إِفَالٌ and أَفَائِلُ, the latter of which they liken to ذَنَائِبُ as plural of ذنُوبٌ.

[In my copy of the Msb the plural is said to be إفالة, and it is also said there, on the authority of IF, that افالة means the young ones of sheep.]

Said in a proverb; that is, what is great has begun small.
