Form 1أَذِىَ2 senses · 1 main
muḍāriʿـَيَفْعَلُmaṣdarأَذًى

Core sense — he was annoyed, molested, harmed, or hurtgenerated

1.1he was, or became, annoyed, molested, harmed, or hurtتأذّى

written أَذًا in some copies of the K and so by IB, and أَذَآءٌ (CK, [but I have not found it in any manuscript copy of the K nor in any other lexicon]), and, according to IB, أَذَاةٌ and أَذِيَّةٌ, or these last two are simple nouns.

El-Khattábee: he experienced, or suffered, slight evil — annoyance, molestation, harm, or hurt — less than what is termed ضَرَر; or he experienced what was disagreeable, hateful, or evil in a small degree.

Construed with بِهِ [by him, or it], and with مِنْهُ [from him, or it].

التَّأَذِّى means being affected by what is termed الأَذَى [what annoys, molests, harms, or hurts one], and also showing the effect of it, which is forbidden by the saying of ʿOmar, إِيَّاكَ وَالتَّأَذِّى بِالنَّاسِ [Beware of showing that you are annoyed, molested, harmed, or hurt by men]; for that is what is within one's power.

1.1.1

Also, with the same muḍāriʿ and maṣdar: it (a thing) was unclean, dirty, or filthy.

maṣdarإِيذَآءٌmuḍāriʿيُؤْذِيهِ

Core sense — he annoyed him, molested him, harmed him, or hurt himgenerated

4.1he did what annoyed, molested, harmed, or hurtفَعَلَ الأَذَى
4.1.1he, or it, annoyed him, molested him, harmed him, or hurt him; he did what was disagreeable, hateful, or evil to himآذِاهُ

and, as a quasi-maṣdar, أَذِيَّةٌ, or أَذَّى, and أَذَاةٌ, and أَذِيَّةٌ; but IB refuses to agree, saying that these three are maṣdars of أَذِىَ. MF says of إِيذَآءٌ, which the author of the K expressly disallows though he himself uses it, that others assert it to have been heard and handed down, and to be required by rule; but he adds that he searched for examples of it in the language of the Arabs, and went through their prose and their poetry, without finding the word.

and leave the requiting of them until you receive a command respecting themوَدَعْ أَذَاهُمْ

on this sense In the Kur 33:47. Those meant are the hypocrites; or the meaning is: leave unregarded their doing to you what is annoying, molesting, harmful, hurtful, or disagreeable to you.

Lane cites “Bd in xxxiii. 53” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given

33:57

Those who annoy Allah and His Messenger - Allah has cursed them in this World and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a humiliating Punishment.

And those who annoy believing men and women undeservedly, bear (on themselves) a calumny and a glaring sin.
