Muḍāriʿ اَدُدَ and اَدِدَ, but this second form is strange, [irregular,] and unknown; and اَدَدَ is mentioned by Lh, from which it seems that he made the past tense to be of the measure فَعِلَ, or that it goes with أَبَى, muḍāriʿ يَأْبَى.

Muḍāriʿ and maṣdar as above.

The meaning is: a calamity befell him.

Lane cites “Bd in xix. 91” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given

Or it is the former word that has the sense of a calamity; and so do أَدُّ or آدُّ [originally آدِدً], which is of the measure فَاعِلْ.

Plural of إِدُّ: إِدادُ, or أَدَادُ (but this, if correct, is an ism jamʿ), or آدَادُ; and of إِدَّةٌ: إِدَدٌ.

Here إِدُّ is used as an adjective, according to Lh.

Hence the saying in the Qur'ān [19:91].

According to another reading, أَدُّا; both mean great, or grievous. Some of the Arabs also say بِشَىْءٍ آدٍّ, which means the same.

(of إِدُّ M, TA) إِدادُ (K, TA,) or أَدَادُ (T, CK, [but this, if correct, is a quasi-pl. n.,]) or آدَادُ (M,) and (of إِدَّةٌ , S, M) إِدَدٌ (T, S, M, K.) You say also أَمْرْإِدُّ [meaning as above], using إِدُّ as an epithet, accord. to Lh. (M.) And دَاهِيَةٌ إِدَّةٌ [A very evil, abominable, or severe, calamity]. (A.) Hence the saying in the Kur [xix. 91], لَقَدْ جِئْتُمْ شَيْئًا إِدًّا Verily ye have done a very evil, or abominable, thing: (S, M: *) or, accord. to one reading, أَدُّا ; both meaning great, or grievous: and some of the Arabs say, بِشَىْءٍ آدٍّ , which means the same.
