Core sense — the last, the hindmost; the latter; the endgenerated
1he came lastly, or latterly—جَآءِ آخِرًا
An adjective, of the measure فَاعِلٌ and أَخِيرٌ: the last, aftermost, hindmost; and the latter, after, hinder; and [as a noun] the end. Opposite of أَوَّلُ [or of أَوَّلٌ when used as a noun], or of مُتَقَدِّمٌ; or what comes after the first or former.
Feminine of the first آخِرَةٌ; plural [masculine] آخِرُونَ (Kur 26:84, and elsewhere), and (masculine and feminine) أَوَاخِرُ, and feminine آخِرَاتٌ also.
مَآخِيرُ is the same as أَوَاخِرُ, as in مَآخِيرُاللَّيْلِ [occurring in the article جهم, meaning the last, or latter, parts of the night].
أَخِيرًا and أُخُرًا and بِأَخَرَةٍ all mean the same.
I did not know it except at the last, or latterly—مَا عَرَفْتُهُ إِلَّا أَخِيرًا
Also الّا بِأَخَرَةٍ, in the same way.
Or جَآءِ أَخِيرًا and أُخُرًا and أَخْرَةٌ and بِأُخْرَةٍ and أُخَرَةٍ and بِأُخَرَةٍ, or أُخْرَةٌ, and بِأُخْرَةٍ and بِآخِرَةٍ and إِخْرِيَّا and أُخْرِيَّا and إِخِرِيَّا and آخِرِيَّا mean: he came lastly of everything.
he used to say, at the end of his sitting, when he wished to rise from the place of assembly, thus and thus—كَانَ يَقُولُ بِأَخَرَةٍ إِذَا أَرَادَ أَنْ يَقُومَ مِنَ المَجْلِسِ كَذَا وَكَذَا
Said in a tradition about Mohammad; or, according to IAth, it may mean in the last, or latter, part of his life.
One also says أَتَيْتُكَ آخِرَ مَرَّتَيْنِ and آخِرَ مَرَّتَيْنِ.
I will not speak to him ever—لَا أُكَلِّمُهُ آخِرَ الدَّهْرِ
[See a similar phrase above, under آخَرُ.]
they came with the last of them—جَاؤُوا عَنْ آخِرِهِمْ
[عن is here the same as بِ, meaning they came all, without exception.]
[And كَانَ ذلِكَ فِى آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ and السَّنَةِ and فى أَوَاخِرِ هِمَا: that was at the end of the month, and of the year, and in its last days.]
the day lengthens hour by hour—النَّهَارُ يَجُرٌ عَنْ آخِرٍ فَآخِرٍ
See also أَخِرٌ, last sentence.
Qur’ān 26:85 approximate — somewhere between 26:20 and 26:189 Lane cites “Kur xxvi. 84”
1.1the Last—الآخِرُ
A name of God: He who remains after all his creatures, both speaking and mute, have perished.
1.2the two hinder dugs of the she-camel—الآخِرَانِ
Opposed to the قَادِمَانِ, the two dugs that are next the thighs.
1.3the last, or other, abode and life; the world to come—الآخِرَةٌ
Used for الدّارُ الآخِرَةُ [and الحَيَاةُ الآخِرَةُ] and الأُخْرَى: the abode, and life, of everlasting duration; [each] an adjective in which the quality of a noun predominates. (Z, and Bd in the place mentioned above.)
[Opposed to الدُّنْيَا. And آخِرَةٌ also means the enjoyments, blessings, or good of the ultimate state, of the other world, or of the life to come; in this sense too it is opposed to دُنْيَا ]
Lane cites “Bd in ii. 3” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.4the piece of wood of the camel's or the horse's saddle against which the rider leans his back—آخِرَةُ الرَّحْلِ
Also السَّرْجِ and آخِرُهُ, and مُؤْخِرَتُهُ, which is a rare form, or, according to Yaakoob, not allowable, and مُؤخِرُهُ and مُؤَخَّرَتُهُ and مُؤَخَّرُهُ, and مُؤَخِّرَتُهُ, which some hold to be a mistake, and مُؤَخِّرُهُ; but the first of all is the most chaste.
It is the opposite of the saddle's قَادِمَة [by which term قادمة is meant the وَاسِط].
The واسط of the camel's saddle is the tall fore part which is next to the breast of the rider; and its آخرة is its hinder part, that is, its broad piece of wood, or its tall and broad piece of wood, which is opposite the head [and back] of the rider; [for] the آخرة and the واسط are the شَرْخَانِ between which the rider sits. This is the description given by En-Nadr [ISh], and all of it is correct; there is no doubt about it.
The plural of آخرة is أَوَاخِرُ.
For آخِرَةُ العَيْنِ, see مُؤْخِرُالعَيْنِ.
آخِرٌ and أَخِيرٌ [according to some] also mean absent. But see أَخِرٌ, second sentence.
