Core sense — one who walks quickly and runs; Gog, of Gog and Magoggenerated

1

One who walks quickly, and runs, in this and that manner.

1.1[Gog]يَأْجُوجُ
[Magog]مَأْجُوجُ

Both are imperfectly declinable.

Two tribes of God's creatures; or two great nations; or two tribes of the children of Japheth the son of Noah. Or, as some say, the first is of the Turks and the second of the Jeel [meaning Jeel-Jeelán, said in the TA in the article جيل, on the authority of ISd, to be a people beyond the Deylem, and on the authority of Az, to be believers in a plurality of gods; the Geli and Gelœ of Ptolemy and Strabo, as noted by Sale in a note on chapter 18, verse 93 of the Qur'ān, on the authority of Golius in Alfrag., page 207].

[The Arabs say they are Scythians of the furthest East, particularly those to the north of the Chinese; or, as some say, the descendants of Japheth, and all the nations living in the north of Asia and of Europe.]

Said, on the authority of I' Ab, to make up nine tenths of mankind.

Or يأجوج is the name of the males and مأجوج that of the females.

One who pronounces them thus, treating the أ as a radical letter, says that the first is of the measure يَفْعُولُ and the second of the measure مَفْعُولُ, as though from أَجَيجُ النَّارِ, or from مَآءٌ أُجَاجٌ, or from أَجَّ said of an ostrich; and that they are imperfectly declinable as being determinate and feminine. Bd, in the same place.

One who pronounces them without ء, making the ا in each an augmentative letter, says that the first is from يَجَجْتُ and the second from مَجَجْتُ. This is so if they are Arabic.

But some say they are foreign names, their being imperfectly declinable being taken to show this (Bd, in the same place); and if so, the ا in them is like that in هَارُوت, مَارُوت, and دَاوُود and the like, the ء is irregular, as in عَأْلِمٌ and the like, and their measure is فَاعُولُ.

Ru-beh used to read آجُوجُ and مَاجُوجُ [in the CK مأجُوج]; and Aboo-Moʿādh, يَمْجُوجُ.
