Core sense — a kind of tree, a species of tamariskgenerated

1

A kind of trees; a species of the طَرْفَآء [or tamarisk; so applied in the present day; called by Forskål (Flora Aeg. Arab. p. 64) tamarix orientalis].

Or a kind of trees, or a certain tree, resembling the طرفآء, except that it is of a better kind, or that it is larger and better in its wood, of which are made yellow and excellent [vessels of the kind called] أَقْدَاح, and of which the Prophet's pulpit was made. It has thick stems, of which doors and other things are made; and its leaves are of the kind called عَبَل, like those of the طرفآء.

AHn says, on the authority of Aboo-Ziyád, that it is of the kind termed عِضَاه, tall, and long in its wood, which is excellent and is carried to the towns and villages, whose clay houses are built upon it; [app. meaning that its wood is used in forming the foundations of the walls;] its leaves are of the kind called هَدَب [synonymous with عَبَل], long and slender, and it has no thorns. Of it are made [bowls of the kinds called] قِصَاع and جِفَان, and it has a red fruit, like a knot of a rope.

Or a kind of large trees, having no fruit: or the same as طرفآء, having no fruit.

Ism waḥda with ة, explained in the A as the سَمُرَة [or gum-acacia tree]: or a tall, straight [tree such as is termed] عِضَاهَة, of which are made the like of أَقْدَاح.

The plural of أَثْلٌ is أُثُولٌ, and that of أَثْلَةٌ is أَثَلَاثٌ. In the CK it is اَثْلاتٌ.

Lane cites “Bd in xxxiv. 15” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
