I will not seek a trace, or vestige, after letting the substance itself escape me—لَا أَطْلُبُ أَثَرًا بَعْدَ عَيْنٍ
Said in a proverb; or, as some relate it, لَا تَطْلُبْ: do not seek.
[may God cut short his footsteps]—قَطَعَ اللّٰهُ أَثَرَهُ
such a one, if asked, will not tell you truly where he comes from—فُلَانٌ لَيَصْدُقُ أَثَرُهُ

El-Wá'ee also gives جَئْتُ, فيِ أَثَرِهِ, في إِثْرِهِ, عَلَى أَثَرِهِ and على إِثْرِهِ in the same sense; of the second and third of these, more than one authority calls the former the more chaste, though the latter seems the more common.

And أَثَرَ ذِى أَثِيرَيْنِ: see آثِرٌ.

Also the same as خَبَرٌ [both of which words are generally held to be synonymous, meaning a tradition, or a narration relating or describing a saying or an action of Mohammad].
Or, according to some: the first means what is related as received from one or more of the Companions of Mohammad, though it may also be applied to a saying of the Prophet; and the second, what comes from Mohammad himself, or from another, or from either.
Or the first means the same as سُنَّةٌ [a practice or saying, or the practices and sayings collectively, of Mohammad, or of any other person who is an authority in matters of religion, namely a prophet or a Companion of Mohammad, as handed down by tradition]. Plural آثَارٌ.
