maṣdarإِتْيَانٌmuḍāriʿيَأْتِى آتِيهِ يَأْتُو
Core sense — he came; he came to him; he brought him; he did, or performed, itgenerated
1.1he came; and I came to him, or was present at it, namely a place—أَتَا
in the dialect of Hudheyl, يَأْت, without ى; also أَتَيْتُهُ. In the imperative some of the Arabs say تِ, suppressing the ا, as is done in خُذْ, كُلْ and مُرْ.
or this is a simple noun; and إِتْيَانَةٌ, which should not be used as an ism waḥda maṣdar except by a bad poetic licence; and أَتْىٌ, أُتِىٌ, إِتِىٌ and مَأْتَاةٌ.
The muḍāriʿ is يَأْتُو; and there is also أَتَوْتُهُ, muḍāriʿ آتُوهُ. For this reason we assign most of the words mentioned in art. اتو to this article as well.
[For the meaning of أَتَى, this verb and جَآءَ are synonymous according to the authorities indicated: some try to distinguish them, but contradict one another in doing so; the slight distinctions between them are best seen by comparing the examples here with those in art. جيأ.]
Er-Rāghib: the proper, or primary, meaning of الإِتْيَانُ is coming with ease.
1.1.1figurative · مجاز — inferredhe lay with her, namely a woman, or his wife—أَتَاهَا
An expression in the Qurʾān 26:165 comes from this.
literally, he came to her. Synonymous with جَامَعَهَا.
Qur’ān 26:166 approximate — somewhere between 26:20 and 26:189 Lane cites “Kur xxvi. 165”
1.1.2he came to the people; and hence, he claimed relationship to the people though not one of them—أَتَى القَوْمَ
[See أَتِىُّ in art. اتو.]
1.1.3he brought him, or it; he made a man, or a thing such as property, to come—أَتَي بِهِ
[See also Form 4; and see below for other meanings of أَتَى when made transitive by means of بِ.]
he begot a child, or children—أَتَى بِوَلَدٍ
she gave birth to him—أَتَتْ بِهِ
Aboo-Is-hák: the words in the Qurʾān 2:143, أَيْنَمَا تَكُونُوا يَأْتِ بِكُمُ اللّٰهُ جَمِيعًا, mean: wherever you are, God will bring you all back to Himself.
he adduced a proof—أَتَى بِبَيِّنَةٍ
on this sense See also Form 3.
1.1.4he entered into, engaged in, or occupied himself with the thing or affair; he did, or performed, it—أَتَى الأَمْرَ
Also أَتَى بِهِ in the same sense.
he committed the crime, sin, or offence—الذَّنْبَ
Likewise بَالذَّنْبِ.
and they do not enter into, or engage in, prayer, except when they are heavy, or sluggish—وَلَا يَأْتُونَ الصَّلَاةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَالَى
he engaged in, or committed, that which was excessively foul or evil—أَتَى الفَاحِشَهَ
In the Qurʾān 9:54.
[Also بِالفَاحِشَةِ: see the Qurʾān 4:23 and 65:1.]
he said, or did, what was good or excellent; he said, or did, well—أَتَى بِالجَيِّدِ مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ فِعْلٍ
See art. جود.
he (a horse) performed, or fetched, run after run—أَتَى بِجَرْىِ بَعْدَ جَرْىٍ
See art. تأم and elsewhere.
Qur’ān 4:20 approximate — somewhere between 4:2 and 4:20 Lane cites “Kur iv. 23”
Qur’ān 4:20 the verse Lane’s citation points to, and it uses this root
وَإِنْ أَرَدتُّمُ ٱسْتِبْدَالَ زَوْجٍ مَّكَانَ زَوْجٍ وَءَاتَيْتُمْ إِحْدَىٰهُنَّ قِنطَارًا فَلَا تَأْخُذُوا۟ مِنْهُ شَيْـًٔا ۚ أَتَأْخُذُونَهُۥ بُهْتَـٰنًا وَإِثْمًا مُّبِينًاBut if ye decide to take one wife in place of another, even if ye had given the latter a whole treasure for dower, Take not the least bit of it back: Would ye take it by slander and manifest wrong?Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1.5and the enchanter shall not prosper where he is, or wherever he may be—وَلَا يُفْلِحُ السَّاحِرُ حَيْثُ أَتَى
It is also said to mean that wherever the enchanter is, he must be slain; such is the doctrine of the lawyers.
In the Qurʾān 20:72; explained as حَيْثُ كَانَ; and: where he comes; or حَيْثُ أَتَى بِسِحْرِهِ, where he comes with his enchantment, or where he performs his enchantment.
Qur’ān 20:69 matched to Lane’s own quotation of it Lane cites “Kur xx. 72”
Qur’ān 20:69 Lane quotes this verse
وَأَلْقِ مَا فِى يَمِينِكَ تَلْقَفْ مَا صَنَعُوٓا۟ ۖ إِنَّمَا صَنَعُوا۟ كَيْدُ سَـٰحِرٍ ۖ وَلَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلسَّاحِرُ حَيْثُ أَتَىٰ"Throw that which is in thy right hand: Quickly will it swallow up that which they have faked what they have faked is but a magician's trick: and the magician thrives not, (no matter) where he goes."Abdullah Yusuf Ali, The Holy Qur’ān (1934)
1.1.6he, or it, became, or came to be—أَتَى
Z mentions this use, in the sense of صَارَ; it is like جَآءَ in the saying جَآءَ البِنَآءُ مُحْكَمًا.
the building became firm, strong, or compact—البِنَآءُ مُحْكَمًا
1.1.7the threatened punishment ordained of God has approached, so do not desire to hasten it—أَتَى أَمْرُ آللّٰهِ فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُوهُ
such a one was approached by an enemy who had come in sight of him—أُتِىَ فُلَانٌ
In the Qurʾān 16:1; that is, its coming has approached.
Like عُنِىَ.
you are approached, O such a one—أُتِيتَ يَا فُلَانٌ
the enemy came to them, or came down upon them, overcoming them—أَتَى عَلَيْهِمُ العَدُوُّ
Said when someone is warned of an enemy that has come in sight of him.
MF observes that أَتَى, when made transitive by means of عَلَى, seems to imply the meaning of نَزَلَ.
Lane cites “Bd in xviii. 40” — a commentary, not the verse; no modern number is given
1.1.8figurative · مجاز — inferredhe destroyed him, or it—أَتَى عَلَيْهِ
And also أَتَاهُ, as will appear below.
time, or fortune, destroyed him—أَتَى عَلَيْهِ الدَّهْرُ
From إِتْيَانُ العَدُوِّ.
but God brought destruction upon them from where they did not reckon, or expect—فأَتاهُمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ حيْثُ لَمْ يَحْتَسِبُوا
but God removed their building from the foundations and demolished it upon them, so destroying them—فَأَتَى اللّٰهُ بُنْيَانَهُمْ مِنَ القَوَاعِدِ
he brought it to an end; he made an end of it; he consumed it; he exhausted it; he reached the end of it—أَتَى عَلَيْهِ
Qurʾān 59:2, where destruction is meant. Es-Semeen.
Qurʾān 16:28.
Said of a thing; for instance, of what was in a bowl, or of what was in a vessel; like فَرَغَ مِنْهُ. Or it is the same as مَرَّ بِهِ, which may be rendered he went away with it; but as an explanation of أَتَى عَلَيْهِ this has another meaning, given below.
destruction came to such a one from the quarter where he felt secure—أُتِىَ فُلَانٌ مِنْ مَأْمَنِهِ
property belonging to such a one perished—أُتِىَ عَلَي يَدِ فُلَانٍ
he is taken away, or carried off, and overcome—يُؤْتَى دُونَهُ
hence the trial, or affliction, came in upon you—مِنْ هٰهُنَا أُتِيَتْ
A poet says
shāhidأَتَى دُونَ حُلْوِالعَيْشِ حَتَّى أَمَرَّهُنُكُوبٌ عَلَي آثَارِهِنَّ نُكُوبُ
, meaning [Misfortunes, in the footsteps of which were misfortunes,] took away [what was sweet, of life, and rendered it bitter].
So I find it written, but I think the last word should be أُتِيتَ, to agree with an earlier phrase from the T.
he missed his object in respect of such a thing by laying hold upon it when it was not fit to be laid hold upon—أُتِىَ مِنْ جِهَةِ كَذَا
the man was deceived, or deluded, and his sense became altered to him, so that he imagined to be true what was not true—أُتِىَ الرَّجُلُ
The verb here is in the passive form.
Like عُنِىَ.
1.1.9he, or it, passed by him, or over him—أَتَى عَلَيْهِ
Synonymous with مَرَّ بِهِ; said, for instance, of a period of time.
a year passed over him; he became a year old—أَتَ عَلَيْهِ حَوْلٌ
See art. حول and elsewhere.
1.1.10
For أَتَتِ النَّاقَهُ and مَا أَحْسَنَ أَتْىَ يَدَى هذِهِ النّاقَةِ, see art. اتو.

(Msb in art. جود .) And أَتَى بِجَرْىِ بَعْدَ جَرْىٍ [He (a horse) performed, or fetched, run after run]. (S in art. تأم , &c.) وَلَا يُفْلِحُ السَّاحِرُ حَيْثُ أَتَى [in the Kur xx. 72] means حَيْثُ كَانَ [And the enchanter shall not prosper where he is, or wherever he may be]; (M, Bd, K;) and where he cometh: (Bd:) or حَيْثُ أَتَى بِسِحْرِهِ [where he cometh with his enchantment; or where he performeth his enchantment]: (Jel:) and it is said to mean that where the enchanter is, he must be slain: such is the doctrine of the lawyers. (TA.) [And in like manner,] أُتِىَ فُلَانٌ , like عُنِىَ , means Such a one was approached by the enemy come in sight of him. (K.) أُتِيتَ يَا فُلَانٌ [Thou art approached &c., O such a one,] is said when one is warned of an enemy that has come in sight of him. (Sgh, TA.) And أَتَى عَلَيْهِمُ العَدُوُّ means The enemy came to them, [or came down upon them, for, as MF observes, أَتَى when trans. by means of عَلَى seems to imply the meaning of نَزَلَ ,] overcoming, or overpowering, them. (Bd in xviii. 40.) Hence, أَتَى عَلَيْهِ [and أَتَاهُ , as will be seen by what follows,] He destroyed him, or it. (Bd ubi suprà.) A poet says, 1 meaning [Misfortunes, in the footsteps of which were misfortunes,] took away [what was sweet, of life, and rendered it bitter]. (TA.) One says also, مِنْ هٰهُنَا أُتِيَتْ , [so I find it written, but I think that the last word should be أُتِيتَ , agreeably with a preceding phrase from the T,] Hence the trial, or affliction, came in upon thee. (Mgh.) And أُتِىَ مِنْ جِهَةِ كَذَا , with the verb in the passive form, He missed [his object in respect of such a thing] by laying hold upon it when it was not fit to be laid hold upon. (Msb.) And أُتِىَ الرَّجُلُ , [also] like عُنِىَ , The man was deceived, or deluded, and his faculty of sense became altered to him, so that he imagined that to be true which was not true.
