Nounإِبِلٌ3 senses · 1 main

Core sense — camels; a herd of camelsgenerated

1camels; a herd of camelsإِبِلٌ

Sb says it is the only noun of this form except حِبِرٌ, and that among adjectives there is none like it except بِلِزٌ; other instances are mentioned, but are not of established authority. IJ adds, with these, حِبِكٌ and إِطِلٌ [which may be of established authority]. To these may be added إِبِطٌ and إِبِدٌ, and perhaps نِكِحٌ and خِطِبٌ, on which see إِبِدٌ.

One also says إِبلٌ sometimes, by way of contraction; or this may be a dialectal variant of the former.

At the least it is applied to a صِرْمَة, that is, a number of camels more than a ذَوْد [which is at least nine], up to thirty; after that comes the هَجْمَة, that is, forty and upwards; and then هُنَيْدَةُ, which is a hundred of إِبِل, or, according to Ibn-'Abbád, a hundred of إِبِل.

It is an ism jamʿ, a word having no proper singular, and it is feminine, because an ism jamʿ that has no proper singular is necessarily feminine when it is not applied to human beings, or when it is applied to irrational beings, and it takes ة in the diminutive; the diminutive of إِبِلٌ being أُبَيْلَةٌ.

The K says it is a singular applied to a plural number, and is neither a plural nor an ism jamʿ; but this assertion, together with the statement about the diminutive, is a kind of contradiction: if it is a singular, and not an ism jamʿ, why is it feminine?

The plural is آبَالٌ and أَبِيلٌ [like عَبِيدٌ, plural of عَبْدٌ q. v.], the plural meaning herds of camels; in the same way أَغْنَامٌ and أَبْقَارٌ mean flocks of sheep or goats and herds of bulls or cows.

The dual, إِبلَانِ, means two herds of camels, each with its pastor, as غَنَمَانِ means two flocks of sheep or goats; or, according to Ibn-'Abbád, the dual means two hundreds of إِبِل.

1.1[The smaller camels]: an appellation applied to sheepالإِبِلُ الصُّغْرَى

So called because they eat more than goats.

1.2figurative · مجاز[Will they not then consider] the clouds that bear the water for rain, [how they are created?]أَفَلَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ

In the Kur 88:17; this is the meaning according to Aboo-'Amr Ibn-El-'Alà.

But according to the one who reads الإِبْلِ, the meaning is: the camels.

Core sense — a Christian monk; the head-man of the Christians; a staffgenerated

1figurative · مجاز — inferred

A Christian monk, so called because of his abstaining from women; or the chief monk; or a devotee; or an old man, or elder; or the chief, or head-man, of the Christians; or the man who calls them to prayer by means of the نَاقُوس. (A Heyth)

Also the beater of the ناقوس; and so أَيْبَلِىٌّ, though in the M this last is given as meaning “a monk.”

This word is either foreign, or altered by the relative ى, or of the same class as إِنْقَحْلٌ [in which the first letter as well as the second is augmentative], for Sb says that the language has no instance of the measure فَيْعَلٌ.

Other forms are أَيْبُلِىٌّ, هَيْبَلِىٌّ, أَبُلِىٌّ and أَيْبَلٌ, this last disallowed by Sb for the reason just given; and أَيْبُلٌ, like أَيْنُقٌ, and أَيْبِلِىٌّ, the last with fet-ḥa to the hemzeh and kesra to the ب, and with the [first] ى sākin.

Or أَيْبَلِىٌّ [apparently a mistranscription for أَيْبِلِىٌّ] is used by poetic licence for أَبِيلِىٌّ, like أَيْنُقٌ for أَنْوُقٌ.

The plural is آبَالٌ and أُبْلٌ, or أُبُلٌ [according to different copies of the K], with damm [which indicates that the former is meant, though it is irregular].

By أَبِيلٌ الأَبِيلِينَ is meant 'Eesà [or Jesus], the Messiah.

1.1

In the Syriac language it means mourning, or sorrowing.

2

Also a staff, or stick.

2figurative · مجاز — inferredliterally, a handful of herbage, or the like, upon a bundle of firewood, or a bundle of dry herbageصِغْثٌ عَلَى إِبَالَةٍ

Also a bundle of firewood; and so إِبَّالَةٌ. Or a great bundle of firewood; and so أُبَالَةٌ, بُلَةٌ and إِبَّالَةٌ. (Bd on 105:3, where it is explained only as meaning a great bundle.)

Or a bundle of dry herbage; and so إِبَّالَةٌ, أَبِيلٌ, أَبِيلَةٌ and إِيبَالَةٌ, with one of the two ب s changed into ى, as mentioned by Az; but the S and O say this is not allowable, because this change may not be made in a word of the measure فِعَّالَةٌ with ة, but only in one without ة, as in دِينَارٌ and قِيرَاطٌ.

وَبِيلَةٌ means the same, belonging to the article وبل.

Hence the proverb, which is also said as إِبَّالَةٍ, though the first is the more common, and as إِيبَالَةٍ, which Az allows but J disallows.

It means a trial, or trying event, coming upon another that had happened before; or plenty upon plenty, as though the word carried two opposite meanings.

Nounإِبَّوْلٌ1 sense

Core sense — a separate portion of a number of birds, horses, or camelsgenerated

1figurative · مجاز — inferredyour camels came in distinct, or separate, companiesجَآءَتْ إِبِلُكَ أَبَابِيلَ

In measure like عِجَّوْلٌ (in the CK, wrongly, عَجُول). A separate, or distinct, portion of a number of birds, of horses, of camels, and of such as follow one another; also إِبِيلٌ, إِبَّالَةٌ, إِبَالَةٌ and إِيْبَالٌ.

Or, according to IAar, it means a bird separating itself from the row of other birds.

It is said to be the singular of أَبَابِيلٌ. Ks says: I used to hear the grammarians say that this last has for its singular إِبَّوْلٌ, like عِجَّوْلٌ, of which the plural is عَجَاجِيلٌ; or its singular is إِبَيلٌ, but whoever says this adds, I have not found the Arabs to know a singular for it; or each of these is its singular, and so is إِبَّالٌ; or its singular is إِبَّالَةٌ, originally meaning “a great bundle,” and it is said that this seems to be its singular, and so أَبَّالَةٌ; or the singular may be إِيبَالَةٌ, as دِينَارٌ is singular of دَنَانِيرٌ; or it has no singular, according to Fr, Akh and AO, like شَمَاطِيطُ and عَبَادِيدٌ.

أَبَابِيلٌ means, according to some, a company in a state of dispersion; or dispersed companies, one following another; or distinct, or separate, companies, like leaning camels; or companies in a state of dispersion.

[in the Kur 105:3, birds in distinct, or separate, flocks]طَيْرٌ أَبَابِيلُ

Or: birds in companies from this and that quarter; or birds following one another, flock after flock; or birds in companies, likened to great bundles in their compactness.

Fei, in the Msb, quotes many fanciful descriptions of these birds, which I omit as absurd.
