which agrees with analogy for an intransitive verb of this class, and اَبُبَ, which is contrary to analogy; maṣdar أَبٌّ, أَبِيبٌ, أَبَابٌ, أَبَابَةٌ, إِبَابَةٌ, and ٱئْتَبَّ [written with the disjunctive alif اِيتَبَّ].

Or: he determined upon journeying, and prepared himself.

El-Aashà says: [I cut you]

صَرَمْتُ وَلَمْ أَصْرِمْكُمُ وَكَصَارِمٍأَخٌ قَدْ طَوَى كَشْحًا وَأَبَّ لِيَذْهَبَا

— that is, I cut you in effect, while I did not really cut you; for a brother who has determined and prepared to go away is like one who cuts.

Hence the proverb لَا عَبَابَ وَ لَا أَبَابَ [or لا عَبَابِ ولا أَبَابِ], which is explained in art. عب.

[Hence,] لَا عَبَابَ وَ لَا أَبَابَ , [or لا عَبَابِ ولا أَبَابِ ,] a prov. [which see explained in art. عب ]. (TA.) [And hence the saying,] هُوَ فِى أَبَابِهِ , (S, M, K,) and أَبَابَتِهِ , and إِبَابَتِهِ , (M,) He is in his [state of, or he is engaged in his,] preparation or equipment [for departing or journeying]. (S, M, K.) The hemzeh in أَبَّ is sometimes changed into و ; and thus وَبَّ , inf. n. وَبٌّ , signifies He prepared himself to assault, or charge, in battle. (M, K.) أَبَّ أَبَّهُ i. q. قَصَدَ قَصْدَهُ , (K,) which signifies He tended, repaired, betook himself, or directed his course, towards him, or it: (S and Msb in art. قصد :) and also, he pursued his (another‘s) course, doing as he (the latter) did. (L in art. وكد .) أَبَّدِ إِلَى وَطَنِهِ , (M, K,) aor. اَبِبَ (IDrd, M, K) and اَبُبَ , (K,) inf. n. أَبٌّ (AA, S, M, K) and إِبَابَةٌ and أَبَابَةٌ (M, K,) and أَبَابٌ , (TA,) He yearned for, longed for, or longed to see, his home. Herbage, whether fresh or dry; or pasture, herbage of whatever kind that beasts feed upon, not sown by men.

Mujáhid: to cattle and other beasts it is what fruit is to men.

Atà: whatever grows upon the face of the earth.

Or whatever vegetable the earth produces; also green herbage, or plants; and, as some say, straw, because cattle eat it; or herbage prepared for pasture and for cutting.

IF: dried fruits, because they are prepared for winter and for journeying.

Plural (of paucity) أَوُبٌّ, originally أَأْبُبٌ.

The time, or season, of a thing; or the time of preparing, or making ready, a thing, as, for instance, of fruit.

It is of the measure فِعْلَانٌ, from أَبَّ in the first of the senses given above, the ن being augmentative; or of the measure فِعَّالٌ, from أَبَّنَ "he watched" or "observed" a thing, the ن being radical. The first derivation is the more correct.
